About Sam

I'm a freelance maths author, editor and animator. I also dabble in music and write mathematical songs.

Get in touch by emailing [email protected] or visit my website, www.samhartburn.co.uk.

Editorial

I offer developmental editing, copy-editing, proofreading and answer checking for maths textbooks and digital resources at all levels and for popular and recreational maths books and content.

I trained in proofreading and copy-editing with the Publishing Training Centre and am an advanced professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. I'm an experienced user of Word, Excel, LaTeX, and PDF commenting and mark-up tools.

Recent clients include Oxford University Press, Pearson, The Open University, Bloomsbury and Atlantic Books.

Writing

If you’re looking for a writer to explain a difficult concept to a general audience, or to bring some interesting maths to life, get in touch! My aim is to help everybody enjoy the beauty, creativity and sheer fun of maths.

I've co-written two maths books:

Maths: 100 Ideas in 100 Words, with Katie Steckles and Ben Sparks, published by Dorling Kindersley for the Science Museum

Short Cuts: Maths, with Katie Steckles, Alison Kiddle and Peter Rowlett, published by Icon Books

I also write articles and poems for mathematics publications, and on my own blog.

Video and graphics

I use software such as GeoGebra and Manim to bring maths to life, producing graphics and animations to inspire and amaze. I've made mathematical animations for the StandUpMaths YouTube channel, as well as my own channel.
