Proofreading 2: Headway builds on the foundations introduced in Proofreading 1: Introduction, helping you to develop greater confidence, accuracy and editorial judgement.
Designed for those with a basic grounding in proofreading, the course supports you in sharpening your concentration and attention to detail while gaining a deeper understanding of professional editorial practice.
Who is this course for?
Proofreading 2: Headway is designed for editorial professionals who already understand the fundamentals of proofreading, either through experience, training or both, and want to develop their skills further. This course is for you if:
- you've completed Proofreading 1: Introduction and would like to build upon the knowledge and skills you've learnt
- you've been working as a proofreader for a while but without any formal training
- you want to complete an assessed course and receive feedback on your work from a dedicated and knowledgeable tutor.
What you'll learn
This course builds on your existing proofreading skills and knowledge. By the time you’ve completed this training, you’ll understand:
- common editorial conventions and house style
- how to deal with layout issues
- the basics of dealing with illustrations, tables, notes and references
- what’s involved in proofreading a variety of texts, from public information to academic books
- strategies for dealing with increasingly demanding texts.
How does the course work?
Proofreading 2: Headway includes six units, each containing a set of study notes that introduce you to relevant proofreading concepts, as well as self-assessed exercises and tutor-marked assignments. When you enrol on the course, you'll be assigned a personal tutor who will support you through the course, mark your assignments and provide you with feedback to support your learning.
Unit 1: Are you ready?
Reminds you of the main methods of proofreading on screen and on paper and summarises good working practices, whatever the type of proofreading required.
Unit 2: Developing concentration and focus
Helps you to develop concentration and focus so that you can keep your eye on all the different aspects of a publication that you need to deal with.
Unit 3: Developing good judgement
Helps you to develop your understanding and judgement about how to decide what must be changed and what is 'good enough' to leave as it is.
Unit 4: House styles and editorial conventions
Explains the complexities of house style and gives you confidence to make style decisions for yourself and to compile your own style sheet.
Unit 5: Illustrations, tables and other parts of text
Provides an overview of how to tackle the elements that are not part of the main text, including tables and illustrations.
Unit 6: Checking the whole picture
Looks at strategies for checking the ‘whole picture’ and ensuring that any publication is complete, clear, consistent and ready for its intended readers.

Proofreading 2: Headway is the next course in the CIEP’s suite of proofreading training, building on the foundations introduced in Proofreading 1: Introduction. It’s ideal for editorial professionals who already have a basic understanding of proofreading and want to strengthen their skills, confidence and professional practice before progressing to Proofreading 3: Progress.

Do I have to complete Proofreading 1: Introduction before enrolling on this course?
If you haven't previously completed any proofreading training or gained any proofreading experience, we highly recommend starting with Proofreading 1: Introduction.
How long do I have to complete the course?
You'll have six months to complete the course from the date that you enrol. As per our terms and conditions, short extensions can be offered if necessary.
How much time will I need to complete the course?
We estimate that you'll need 20 to 25 hours to complete the course, but this will depend on your learning style and personal preferences.
What software do I need to complete the course?
You'll need access to Microsoft Word (Office 365) and Adobe Acrobat Reader (which you can download for free) to complete the exercises included in the course. Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC will be beneficial but is not required.
Which type of English does the course teach?
The course follows and teaches the conventions of British English.
Is the course worth any CIEP upgrade points?
Yes, completion of the course results in 2 upgrade points. Passing the course results in 5 upgrade points.
