Getting to Grips with Grammar and Punctuation is the perfect course for anyone who works with words and wants to develop their knowledge and understanding of the basic rules of English grammar and punctuation.

About the course

The course explains how to use basic grammar and punctuation accurately. It will help you to communicate your message clearly and reduce misunderstanding and misinterpretation.

The course alternates units on grammar and punctuation, with two basic chapters followed by two which go into more detail. Each unit has several sets of short exercises and there are two quizzes along the way to test your knowledge.

The course concentrates on British English, although some differences in American English are highlighted where appropriate. It is ideal for you if:

  • you want a refresher on the basics of English grammar
  • you feel that you have not had the opportunity to learn enough about grammar
  • you want to build confidence in your knowledge and understanding of grammar.

What the course will teach you

By the time you’ve completed this training, you’ll understand:

  • the basic conventions of English grammar, including sentences, verbs and pronouns
  • the building blocks of English punctuation
  • some finer points of usage and misusage
  • the contexts in which these conventions should, or need not, be applied.

  • Three longer texts on which to practise everything you’ve learned

What skills and tools do you need?

This course follows British English spelling, grammar and punctuation conventions in the main, although some differences in American English are highlighted where appropriate. You’ll also need:

  • fluency in English
  • familiarity with the functions of word processing programs – this course assumes use of MS Word (Office 365).
