Guides and fact sheets

Our guides provide a basic introduction to the various skills and knowledge needed to work as an editorial professional. They are intended for copyeditors and proofreaders, both practising and potential, and will also prove useful to others involved in publishing content, including businesses, organisations, agencies, students and authors. The guides are written by experienced editors, who are usually members of the CIEP.

CIEP members have free access to the PDF versions of the guides once logged in.

The guides are well written with common sense and offer invaluable advice.

Fact sheets

Our fact sheets boost your learning about editing and proofreading. Many support the development of editing and proofreading skills; others delve into how to work as an editorial professional in publishing or communications.

CIEP members can access these resources for free once logged in as a member.

Learn from leading writers and language professionals

Learning from others is at the heart of the CIEP community. Most of our fact sheets are written by CIEP members, who have distilled their experience into short but jam-packed learning resources for you.

Who can access our fact sheets?

Some of our resources are free and public. Anyone is welcome to read them.

If you are a freelance editor or proofreader, you may find some of the free resources useful to pass to clients to explain what you do, especially our free quick guide to using editorial professionals.

The rest of our fact sheets are free to our members (once logged in), and can be purchased by non-members.

Please note: If you have ordered a PDF guide, you will receive a separate email with your guide. If this doesn't arrive within five working days, please contact our office. Any postage and packaging costs and/or VAT, where it is due, will be added before payment.
