Webinar: Knowing your limits: How much to intervene when proofreading and editing

Having a good understanding of acceptable levels of intervention is vital for any editor or proofreader. As an editorial professional, you want to make sure you're leaving a piece of text more accurate, clear and fit for purpose than how you found it. But you also want to make sure you're not introducing new errors or unnecessarily changing the author's meaning or tone.

This one-hour webinar, delivered by Hester Higton and Helen White, will explore:

  • what over-intervention looks like in editing and proofreading
  • what the knock-on effects of over-intervention are
  • how you can develop your judgement of when to make a change or when to 'leave well enough alone'.

Hester and Helen will provide examples of the impact of over-intervention based on short extracts that will be sent to participants in advance of the webinar. Plus, there'll be plenty of time to answer any questions you might have. You'll leave the session feeling more confident in your decision-making abilities with your editing and proofreading work.

This webinar will be particularly helpful for anyone who is currently enrolled on one of the CIEP's core courses (Proofreading 1: Introduction to Proofreading 3: Progress and Copyediting 1: Introduction to Copyediting 3: Progress) or who has identified Editorial judgement in the CIEP Competency Framework as an area for improvement.

The webinar will be recorded and the recording will be made available on the On demand page of the CIEP website. Bookings will close on 6 October at 1pm BST.
