Webinar: What's new in the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition?
If you’re an editor who regularly uses the Chicago Manual of Style in their work, you will probably be aware of the new edition of this classic manual, which was released last September. This edition contains a few important departures from previous editions that have implications for copyeditors and proofreaders, which this webinar intends to cover. Join us on Tuesday 7 October from 2pm to 3pm BST to hear from academic copyeditor and self-declared Chicago fan Marieke Krijnen to learn what to look out for in the new edition! The session will cover:
- Changes in capitalisation, such as rules for title case and for titles used in apposition
- New guidelines for citing material generated using AI, such as images
- Changed guidance on the use of inclusive language
- New rules for punctuation, including the capitalisation of the first word of a sentence following a colon
- Changes in numerials-vs.-words rules, such as for days of the week expressed as ordinals
- Changes in rules for non-English words, such as no italics for words that are part of a multilingual author’s vocabulary
- Changes in citation rules, including using “et al.” for three or more authors in the text and notes and dropping the requirement to list the publisher location.
There’ll also be a Q&A section with plenty of time to answer your questions.
The webinar will be recorded and the recording will be made available on the "On demand" page of the CIEP website. Bookings will close at 1pm BST on Thursday 7 October.
