About Sam

I'm a freelance author, editor and creative mathematician.

Editorial

I help authors and publishers to create clear, engaging and accurate mathematical content.

I’ve written several maths books myself, so I know how it feels to have your work edited and published. I know how important it is that the equations are set properly, that the subscripts and superscripts are in the right places, and that the illustrations show exactly what you want them to show. I work closely with authors, publishers, designers and typesetters to ensure that content is accurate, while also meeting design constraints and publisher style requirements.

I’ve specialised in mathematical proofreading and editing for over ten years, including textbooks, digital resources, and popular and recreational maths. As well as developmental editing, copy-editing and proofreading, I can write or check answers to exercises and worked solutions and carry out a technical edit to make sure that the maths in your content is correct.

I trained in proofreading and copy-editing with the Publishing Training Centre and am an advanced professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. I'm an experienced user of Word, Excel, LaTeX, MathType and PDF commenting and mark-up tools.

Previous clients include Imagine Learning, Oxford University Press, Pearson, The Open University, Bloomsbury and Atlantic Books.

Writing

If you’re looking for a writer to explain a difficult concept to a general audience, or to bring some interesting maths to life, get in touch! I accept commissions for articles, books and online content.

I've co-written two maths books:

Maths: 100 Ideas in 100 Words, with Katie Steckles and Ben Sparks, published by Dorling Kindersley for the Science Museum

Short Cuts: Maths, with Katie Steckles, Alison Kiddle and Peter Rowlett, published by Icon Books

I also write articles and poems for mathematics publications, and on my own blog.

Video and graphics

I use software such as GeoGebra and Manim to bring maths to life, producing graphics and animations to inspire and amaze. I've made mathematical animations for the StandUpMaths YouTube channel, as well as my own channel.
