I offer copyediting and proofreading services and have experience in government and business coupled with recent work in academic publishing.
From business reports to blogs, from multi-author academic books to indie novels, I will work with you to get your text in perfect shape. I enjoy working closely with authors and editors to ensure their voice and style shine through in the final text. No two projects are the same and I will always tailor my approach to the specific needs of the task in hand.
I have been a freelance editor and proofreader since 2015. Prior to that I worked in government (central and local) and the financial services sector. This has given me experience of a wide range of publication types and subject matter.
Since going freelance, I have handled a number of academic publications, mostly multi-author collections of essays or conference papers, on a wide range of subjects.
I have a particular focus on Plain English which I have developed, firstly, in the financial services industry editing texts on complex technical issues to make them accessible to non-expert audiences, and secondly, in the academic sphere working with authors who do not have English as their first language.

Testimonials
"John was extremely professional, prompt, responsive, organized and reliable. He has an eye for detail and delivered the reviewed version even before the deadline. I would certainly work with him again and do not hesitate for a second to recommend him."

"I have worked with a number of editors and proofreaders. The field is robust since I have been generally satisfied. John Ingamells is, however, superb for a number of reasons:
"First, he is accommodating. I was recently under a strict publishing deadline and he managed to find the required time to work on my manuscript.
"Second, he is resilient. This project, an edited volume, required coordination with 11 contributors, and, though arduous, he completed the process on time.
"Third, he is truly a gentleman. He agreed to work closely with the publisher, as well as myself as the editor, and he did so with grace and professional acumen.
"In short, I recommend John highly as a proofreader par excellence."
