About Clare

Since 2016, I’ve been offering my clients a range of freelance editorial services on academic and research texts. I also work as a grant reviewer for STEM research proposals. Common topics I work on include:

  • medical and life sciences,
  • business management and finance,
  • education,
  • psychology and
  • language acquisition.

I’ve summarized my services below. This isn’t an exhaustive list: please do email [email protected] if you have any questions. If you’re not sure what service(s) you need, please also attach a sample document so I can give you my suggestions.

For writers:

  • Proofreading and copyediting manuscripts in Word (UK and US English)
  • Line editing to improve clarity and flow
  • Making sure styles and formatting match university or journal guidelines
  • Cross-checking main text with abstract, tables, reference list, etc.

For universities and research bodies, as above, plus:

  • Formatting using Word Styles to ensure a professional, consistent appearance
  • Drawing up a style guide for consistency across projects
  • Plain English editing for technical or jargon-heavy texts

For project managers or managing editors:

  • Copyediting in Word (tracked changes, comments), Adobe (PDF markup, BSI symbols) or content management systems

As well as post-graduate degrees in French and language teaching, I have the following editorial training:

  • Basic Proofreading (Merit), Publishing Training Centre, 2020
  • Proofreading 1, Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, 2020
  • Copyediting 1, Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, 2021
