About Andrew

I’m Andrew Hodges, PhD, a book coach and editor. I support cultural anthropologists and fiction authors, invigorating, improving, and polishing their writing. I'm passionate about speculative fiction, and my interests range from YA to literary, and from novels with horror elements to fantasy romance. Novels with creative worldbuilding, intriguing characters, and social justice themes excite me.

I've worked with New York Times-bestselling authors and Hugo finalists, and I’ve edited translations of novels by Nobel Prize for Literature nominees too. As an anthropology developmental editor, I’ve edited ethnographies published with top university presses, including Stanford University Press, Indiana University Press, and University of Minnesota Press.

Ethnography gives me the opportunity to combine my academic and fiction developmental editing knowledge and skills, and I run workshops on these topics at universities and writers conferences across Europe, and online in the USA.

I’ve published ethnographies myself with Routledge and University of Toronto Press, so I know firsthand how difficult a large writing project can be!

Some manuscripts I’ve recently enjoyed working on include: The Notorious Virtues (Alwyn Hamilton), Thorn Season (Kiera Azar), Queen of Faces (Petra Lord), Listen Closely (Leon Egan), Under the Neon Lights (Arriel Vinson), and Croatian Tales of Long Ago (Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić).

I’m an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and have completed editorial training with the CIEP. To keep my skills fresh, I am currently completing a certificate in editing (developmental editing pathway) with the University of Chicago Graham School.

If you’re interested in working with me, get in touch. I offer a half-hour consultation to anyone interested in hiring me, where we can discuss your project in detail. I’m also happy to read a short extract and offer some brief initial feedback or edits if I feel we’re a good fit. Please take a look at my website for more details and to schedule a consultation.

Testimonials:

Andy is an excellent editor. He gives more than a standard line/copy edit. He helped clarify POVs and the timeline for Scarlet and the White to make this a better and easier book to read.

- Michael Fellowes, SF Horror author

Working with Andy made my debut novel better, and the results in distribution and reviews prove it. Now we've produced two books together in the same series. I would absolutely recommend working with The Narrative Craft if you're in need of sound feedback, a great partner in the process, and a push in the best direction.

-Nathan Wagner, Speculative Western author

I have worked repeatedly with Dr. Hodges on scholarly manuscripts and each project has been a huge success! His editing skills are tremendous! His meticulous eye for details and his scholarly background make him my favorite editor!

-Pavel Brunssen, German Studies/Antigypsyism Studies, University of Heidelberg

I hired Andy as a developmental editor for my contemporary fantasy novel. He was a pleasure to work with, responsive, quick, and thorough in his feedback. His critique and suggestions have definitely helped me improve my novel and to deepen the story I wanted to tell. Andy gives good value for the financial investment, and I highly recommend his services to any author.

-Robert Winter, Romantasy author

In an ideal academic world, colleagues would foster a supportive environment, providing reciprocal assistance with writing projects. In real life, there´s Andrew. With his encouraging guidance and feedback, Andrew helped me in crafting a well-organized book proposal, articulating the book's ideas and arguments cohesively. I now feel much more confident about it and am prepared to submit it to publishers.
