Works edited by Andrew Chapman

I have copy edited many books (fiction and non-fiction) and been editor of three newsstand magazines (two history magazines and one computer title), a B2B title and a newspaper.

I now focus on copy editing books – I love helping authors achieve the right style, accuracy and consistency within their work to bring it to a suitable standard for professional publication. And I'm the sort of person who finds fact-checking fun. As my experience attests, I'm very much a generalist (I love the general knowledge round in pub quizzes), but my particular enthusiasm is for editing mystery and/or historical fiction and history, topography or reference-related non-fiction.

For Unbound, I have edited 2017/2018 novels such as The Continuity Girl, Married to a Cave Man, The Hope & Anchor and The Sheriff's Catch, and am now working with celebrity authors such as Richard Jobson and David Quantick.

I have edited many non-fiction books on health and social care topics for Hawker Publications, including the bestselling And Still the Music Plays and its sequel Watching the Leaves Dance (Oliver Sacks-style case studies of people with dementia).

I have also written or contributed to various books, including: The Monster Guide to Jobhunting (Pearson Education, 2001); Actors’ Handbook 2009-10 (Casting Call Pro); The A-Z of Genealogy Websites and 101 Family History Tips (both Future Publishing, 2006); Human: the Definitive Guide to Our Species (Dorling Kindersley, 2004); 1001 Inventions that Changed the World (Cassell, 2009)

Software experience

I am an experienced user of all of the following: Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop. I am familiar with HTML and PHP. I am also well versed in coaxing files from one format into another.

Additional services

Perhaps unusually for a 'words person', I also have vast experience of typesetting and page layout for books and magazines alike. I have helped numerous self-publishers to publish via platforms such as Amazon CreateSpace and Ingram Spark.

I offer editorial services under the aegis of my own business, Prepare to Publish Ltd; I have now built up a network of more than 20 trusted freelancers through which I can offer services such as development/structural editing, manuscript assessment, typesetting, design, ghostwriting and publishing consultancy.

I really can't thank you enough for your hard work and professionalism in consistently delivering every issue at the highest quality and generally making a great magazine. I will most definitely recommend your services.

John Garewal, managing director, Dennis Publishing

Andrew has worked with us as an editor and a designer for many years. he has always done a great job despite the 'challenges' we send him on a regular basis. He is an excellent colleague - unflappable and knowledgeable and I would thoroughly and unreservedly recommend him.

Dr Richard Hawkins, managing director and editor-in-chief, Hawker Publications

Andrew was the ideal editor for the Actors' Handbook. He combined excellent editorial & design skills with a breadth of industry understanding and experience which was critical in turning our scribbled concepts and beer-mat outlines into a polished, refined end product.

Andrew's accuracy, versatility and patience were exactly what we needed to take this project forward, and I would not hesitate recommending Andrew as a writer, editor, designer or consultant.

Chris Timms, Blue Compass Ltd

You made it all completely painless and improved the book no end while you were at it.

I’m really pleased. Thank you so much for what you’ve done with it.

Patrick Kincaid, author

I’m blown away by your feedback. You’ve pinpointed the MS’ weaknesses with surgical precision and I’ve already learned heaps! As a debut novelist I can’t ask for more
