The Art of Querying (e-learning)
Every project comes with questions and anomalies. The Art of Querying e-learning course teaches you how to ask your author about the problems you’ve identified, tactfully and efficiently. It is a self-assessed course and delegates can work through the course content in their own time.

About the course
Anyone whose work involves editing, proofreading, indexing, dealing with writers or managing a publishing project will benefit from taking this course, especially if you already have a little experience.
This course is ideal for you if:

What the course will teach you
The Art of Querying teaches you how to ask your author about problems you’ve identified, tactfully and efficiently. This course will help you to:
- define what, when and how to ask (and what not to!)
- formulate a tool with standard questions and effective wording
- offer guidance on procedure, timing and technical issues
- build a reputation as an editor who communicates effectively
- query narrative, tables, graphs and pictures
- develop strong working relationships.
Course content
Unit 1: Questions and answers
The questions you should ask at the start of a project, and the answers you need from your client.
Unit 2: Approaches
Developing a good working relationship, approaching the material and using a decision tool. Formulating queries and notes to the author.
Unit 3: Topics
Dealing with inconsistency, ambiguity and omission, and handling errors, including how to point out errors tactfully.
Unit 4: Content
Improving the content of different elements of a publication with sensitivity, including prelims, narrative and argument, vocabulary and terminology, references, tables and artwork.
What skills and tools do you need?
This course follows British English spelling, grammar and punctuation conventions. You’ll also need:
- fluency in English
- a knowledge of English grammar
- core copyediting skills
- familiarity with the functions of word processing programs – this course assumes use of MS Word (Office 365)
