Webinar: Art of the Query

Webinar: Art of the Query

Knowing how and when to raise queries with an author or client is one of the most important parts of an editorial professional’s toolbox.

The ability to be clear yet sensitive and diplomatic, whilst also considering the communication needs and preferences of a client, can not only ensure that the text is of the highest quality but that the relationship between editor and author is one built on trust and transparency.

If you edit, you must be comfortable with querying to resolve certain issues. This webinar will cover good querying practices, useful wording (tone and style) for good results, time savers for standard queries, making judgment calls for when to query and when to change (and when to email instead!), and more. Join us for a webinar on the art of the query, delivered by Laura Poole, on Thursday 29 January from 3pm GMT to 4pm GMT and learn how querying can be an important and effective tool in editing.

During the session, Laura will explore:

  • the what, the when and the why of querying
  • how to judge when to query vs making a fix
  • how to resolve queries
  • using good practice querying as a communication tool.

This webinar will be particularly helpful for anyone who is currently enrolled on one of the CIEP's core courses (Proofreading 1: Introduction to Proofreading 3: Progress and Copyediting 1: Introduction to Copyediting 3: Progress) or who has identified Editorial judgement in the CIEP Competency Framework as an area for improvement.

The webinar will be recorded and the recording will be made available on the On demand page of the CIEP website. Bookings will close on 29 January at 2pm GMT.
