Based in Darlington, County Durham, I am a freelance copy-editor and writer with expertise in science, technology, video games, board games and film. I trained at the science publishers Elsevier and Nature Publishing Group, and I have more than 13 years of experience as a professional copy-editor. Before going freelance in 2013, I was the copy-editing manager for Nature Reviews, where I trained and managed a team of seven copy-editors.
I regularly copy-edit news stories, features and scientific manuscripts for science journals such as Nature and New Scientist. I also copy-edit non-fiction books on a range of subjects for clients such as Wiley and Osprey Games.
I am passionate about technology and video games. I write features on gaming for magazines and websites including Eurogamer, Kotaku UK, EDGE, Wireframe, PC Gamer, Nintendo Life, Retro Gamer and Rock Paper Shotgun. In addition, I am chief editor of the gaming site A Most Agreeable Pastime, and I co-present and produce a film podcast, 101 Films You Should Have Seen.
If you have a project in the realms of science, technology, gaming or film, I'd love to hear from you. You can see examples of my work at https://lewispackwood.com.

Testimonials
I have found Lewis to be a fast-working, accurate and thoroughly dependable subeditor and proofreader. He asks the right questions, makes text catchier and easier to read, and is adept at handling new systems and technology. And he does it all with a smile.
Chris Simms, chief subeditor, New Scientist
Lewis Packwood has provided copy-editing support to my team for the past few years.
Our continued engagement of Lewis is testament to the consistency of his editing and the professionalism with which he conducts his business. We are highly selective in who we trust with our manuscripts.
As an experienced copy editor, Lewis is able to adjust his editing style or the depth of his editing (heavy or light) according to the requirements of the manuscript or when working to a given brief. He has a sensitive touch, and this works well on our papers.
Nature Reviews
With a keen sense of the big picture, an eye for details, and a knack for science communication, Lewis Packwood did an outstanding job as the copy editor for the forthcoming book Insect Biodiversity. Not only was he conscientious, thorough, and highly skilled in all aspects of this herculean job, but he also was a genuine pleasure to work with. We need him for the next job, and the next, and the next…
Prof. P.H. Adler, author of Insect Biodiversity: Science and Society
Having worked for almost seven years on my two-volume box set Guitar EXP, it came to the final hurdle, the proofreading of 480 pages. It was therefore imperative to find the right person for the job. I am glad to say that it was a pleasure having Lewis on board for this final but crucial step.
Armand Serra, author of Guitar EXP
