About Joe

I am a freelance proofreader and editor with experience across a variety of formats, both publishing and non-publishing. I primarily offer copy-editing and developmental editing of non-fiction works mainly within the humanities and social sciences field, including academic/trade publications, memoirs/biographies, reports and multi-author books, and within this have worked and continue to work with university presses and other publishers, as well as several UNESCO-affiliated organisations.

Having obtained a degree in English studies and spent several years teaching English to speakers of other languages, I have a passion for the language. A large proportion of my editorial work has been on texts written by non-native users of English, which my background has helped me to approach with great care and understanding. I am also passionate about LGBTQ+ issues, promoting equality and raising diverse voices, and would love to work more with authors from our community.

I also have experience in writing (mainly sports related) for magazines and websites.

We really appreciate all your hard work for us over the last couple of years, taking on a variety of different tasks and always delivering on time and to expectations... more specifically, we wanted to thank you for all your efforts on the the website review that you worked on. It certainly was a challenging project and your support meant that we were able to really impress the client – they said you had done an outstanding job. — RWS language services

I can honestly say, it has been a fantastic experience. This is my fifth book and easily the best experience. Without a shadow of a doubt, you have made the book better. Not just from a language perspective, but from some amazing knowledge that has clarified and improved the text. Thank you so much. — Dr Mark Doidge, University of Brighton

I am also indebted to my copy-editor Joe Haining for his scrupulous attention to detail, for the clarity of his advice, for the speed of his responses and for his unfailing good humour; his invaluable help, and his extraordinary eye for detail, and his valuable suggestions for improvement contributed in no small measure to making this very important part of the process pleasurable. — Dr John Drakakis, University of Stirling (from Shakespeare's Resources, Manchester University Press, 2021)
