Equity, Diversity & Inclusion for Editorial Professionals

This two-part programme is designed for editorial professionals who want to refresh their awareness of inclusion principles, as well as understand how they can keep up to date with fast-changing language around a range of topics, namely Race & Ethnicity, LGBTQIA+, Gender-identity, Disability and Neurodiversity. Sessions will take place from 2pm to 4pm BST.

Editorial professionals play a key role in ensuring texts are free from language which may cause harm. But being able to identify words or phrases which are potentially harmful, and having the confidence to address them with authors and clients, can be a barrier to their ability to advocate for audiences to their fullest potential.

How does the course work?

Part one: EDI purpose, context and how to champion, 15 October 2-4pm BST

Part one of the course explores the case for inclusion in 2026, including the impact of good practice EDI principles on businesses and society. The session also examines the role of the editorial professional with regards to EDI, covering allyship; when and how to challenge and speak up with confidence; how to maintain an awareness of EDI principles;  and resources to help keep up to date with ever-changing language and descriptions around diversity and identity. 

Part two: Inclusive language and communication, 22 October 2-4pm BST

Part two of the course examines language in more detail, specifically exploring respectful language race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, neurodiversity and generational differences. The underlying premise of the session is that language is a constant evolution it's okay for us to make mistakes and learn from them. The session will close with a summary and Q&A section.
