Editing stories with heart, humour, emotional chaos, and the occasional feral character — with absolutely no judgement over your 2am writing spirals.
Hi, I’m Kerry, a freelance editor and author specialising in romance, romcoms, women’s fiction and children’s literature, including picture books, middle grade and YA.
Before moving into editing full time, I spent more than 20 years working in education, supporting children with SEND and working front of house in a busy primary school office. Those years taught me patience, diplomacy, organisation and how to stay calm under pressure — all skills that prove surprisingly useful when working with authors and manuscripts.
I work mainly with indie authors and offer a range of editorial services, including combined line and copyediting, developmental editing, proofreading, manuscript critiques, beta reading, and query package critiques. My approach is collaborative, supportive and honest: I want authors to feel encouraged while helping them shape their stories into the strongest versions possible.
As an author myself, I understand the vulnerability that comes with sharing your work. My goal is never to edit the personality out of a story, but to preserve the writer’s voice while helping the manuscript shine.
Although my main specialisms are commercial fiction and kidlit, I’ve also worked on thrillers, memoirs, horror, and short stories, and I’m always happy to chat about whether a project might be a good fit.
If your characters are making terrible decisions for understandable emotional reasons, we’ll probably get along just fine.
Favourite genres to work on:
🩷 Romance & romcom
🧑🏼👩🏽👧🏼 Women’s fiction
🏃🏻♀️➡️ Young Adult
🏫 Middle grade
🧸 Picture books
📘 Memoir
I’m always happy to chat about other projects, fictional crushes, plot holes, or emotionally devastating side characters.
We’ll probably work well together if…
🔹You want honest but kind feedback
🔹You love character-driven stories
🔹You want your voice preserved, not overwritten
🔹You want someone who understands both the creative side of writing and the technical side of editing.
🔹You’ve become emotionally attached to fictional people and refuse to apologise for it.
🔹You’re happy to hear “this isn’t working yet” followed immediately by “but here’s how we can fix it.”
What my wonderful clients say:
"Kerry's line editing breathed into my prose exactly the life I had hoped for. I'm a good storyteller and writer, but Kerry took my work to a new level. I've studied her edits not only to revise my novel, but also to learn how to use her techniques. She is the consummate professional, always promptly responding to my emails, delivering her work on time and taking the extra step to address questions. I cannot recommend her enough if you're serious about your writing." Elayne - Contemporary YA Fiction
"Kerry is absolutely fantastic—thoughtful, detailed, and incredibly insightful. Her notes were clear, constructive, and delivered with warmth, kindness, and genuine care. She helped me identify areas of confusion, strengthened my characters' arcs, and highlighted exactly where I needed clarity and flow. Kerry went above and beyond, giving me confidence and excitement about my manuscript. I genuinely can't recommend her enough!" Charlie - Middle Grade Adventure
“This was my first time working with an editor, and honestly, it’s been an absolute pleasure from start to finish. The feedback I received was exactly what I needed — thoughtful, honest, and always delivered with care and respect. Every suggestion felt spot-on, and I’ve learned so much in a short space of time. I’m already seeing how much stronger my writing is becoming thanks to her input. I’d recommend Kerry to anyone — especially if you’re looking for someone who understands how to help shape your work without ever taking your voice away.” Shaun - Memoir
“Kerry's evaluation of my query materials was immensely helpful! Her comments and suggestions were insightful and actionable, with concrete advice for revision. Her suggestions for minor changes to the first chapter of my manuscript were especially useful and really helped give the opening more immediate interest. She was also communicative, reasonably priced, and very encouraging.” Amanda - Historical Fantasy Romance
“Kerry delivered a professional and thoughtful evaluation of my manuscript, which was both encouraging and helpful in terms of further development. She raised some issues which I had overlooked, and included comments on the manuscript itself in addition to the comprehensive reader report.” Paul - Middle Grade Sports Fiction
