Rui Queirós de Faria: Developmental Editing and AI. Are we asking the right questions?

This session is best suited to non-fiction developmental editors and will offer practical advice on how to accomplish a large-scale editorial project. 

It is undeniable that AI has posed very complicated challenges for the publishing industry. In the case of non-fiction developmental editing, professionals are increasingly being replaced by digital tools that don't always deliver the quality work one might expect. From an ethical perspective, this also raises many questions. Based on a case study, I'll try to share the experiences I've had with AI in a large-scale developmental editing project. I will show how digital tools can be used to perform simple tasks, while also talking about the importance of limiting their use, as they can be counterproductive and undermine editorial standards. Furthermore, I will discuss specific non-AI strategies I have used to overcome the most frequent obstacles when tackling a large project of this kind.

Rui Queirós de Faria

Rui Queirós Faria is currently the Assistant Editor at Edições Afrontamento, an independent publishing house based in Porto (Portugal) that has been editing books in the Social Sciences and Humanities since 1963. He graduated in History and obtained his Master's degree in Medieval Studies from the University of Porto, researching in the field of Jewish Studies. He has trained at various institutes across the UK to strengthen his editorial skills, such as the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, the Publishing Training Centre and the University of Oxford. In the future, he intends to transition into Foreign Rights, for this is where his qualities best align with the department's mission. In his spare time, he edits a literary magazine, writes poetry and goes trekking in the north of Portugal and Spain.
