Sarah Sodhi: Setting new standards for PDF markup – but what should they be?

9am – 10am BST, 21 September 2025 ‐ 1 hour

Session 2 – breakout seminars (running concurrently)

This session is best suited to proofreaders who are interested in learning about, and being involved in shaping the future of, good practice markup.

Since PDF markup became normal working practice, publishers and proofreaders have been working out their own ways to mark up proofs without a set of industry standards to guide them. These methods usually evolve from the perspective of Editorial without an understanding of Design practices. The results often don’t take advantage of the full functionality of the software and the efficiencies a more uniform approach can bring for both Editorial and Design. Existing guidance is patchy, often trailing behind the latest software updates. And, most importantly, many editorial professionals don’t know what they don’t know, so are unaware of the potential for huge improvement across the industry.

Join panel speakers for a discussion about what we are currently doing, what we could and should be doing, and how we can get there. Do we need a new set of BSI standards for PDF markup? Is this even possible? Can we agree a set of grounding principles instead? Who needs to be involved in this? Come and join the discussion – bring your thoughts, experiences and ideas and help shape the future at this key time of change.
