Insights from medical communications: Teamwork, negotiation and asserting editorial authority

9.30am – 10.25am BST, 12 September 2026 ‐ 55 mins

Session 1 – breakout (running concurrently)

This session introduces the world of medical communications, while highlighting skills and approaches that transfer beyond the sector. We’ll explore how med comms agencies differ from traditional publishing in their purpose, processes, priorities and client relationships, and the desirable skills and qualities of a med comms editor.

The session will also cover how to become a valued team member: managing workloads, giving clear and constructive feedback, and balancing flexibility with the confidence to assert editorial authority. We’ll touch on practicalities such as estimating and justifying editorial time, negotiating deadlines, and adapting to changing client needs.

Drawing on real-world experience, the session will emphasise teamwork, problem-solving and negotiation, with plenty of time for questions.
