Being client centred: Tailoring your approach to suit your clients' needs (and your own)

1pm – 1.55pm BST, 12 September 2026 ‐ 55 mins

Session 3 – breakout (running concurrently)

In this session, we'll talk about how being client-centred allows us to build strong relationships, leading to repeat work and referrals. I'll talk about meeting the client where they are – not turning clients away when they 'aren't ready' – using coaching, doctoring and other ways of working along with traditional methods. We’ll use a series of case studies and discuss how delegates could tailor their approach to meet the clients' needs.

Clients value a relationship with their editor or coach more and more and sometimes editors are finding themselves in situations where the ‘handholding’ element of the work becomes too much or they aren’t equipped for their clients’ emotional needs. Delegates will leave the session with practical ideas about how to tweak the way they work to meet clients' needs while holding their boundaries and keeping themselves safe.

There is no question that the way we work is changing, and we need to keep up with this changing landscape. Being rigid about the way we work, using templates and fixed structures might not work for every client, so I'll focus on how we adapt and how much.
