The emotional investment in editing

9.30am – 10.25am BST, 12 September 2026 ‐ 55 mins

Session 1 – breakout (running concurrently)

Editors are an engaged part of an author’s book team rather than being a transactional, unemotional part of the publication process.

More than one of my authors has moved me to tears. And I’ve told them so.

The emotional investment in editing (from the point of view of authors and editors) has been on my mind for some time now.

In late 2024 I ran a questionnaire for first-time authors about the emotional investment in editing. The key finding was that building trust is critical to supporting a first-time author.

By joining this session, delegates will find out why emotional investment matters to authors and editors and they’ll take away an understanding of how to frame the author–editor relationship and how to build trust.
