Proofreading course

Train to work as a proofreader with our three-part proofreading course

If you want to work as a freelance proofreader, you’ll need a sure way to prove your professional competence in a toughly competitive market. Our proofreading training courses are designed by experienced practitioners to help get you up and running as a competent and professional proofreader, and our training is highly regarded in the publishing industry.

Is there a gap in your proofreading skills?

If you’re working in-house, training for proofreading may be scarce or idiosyncratic to your organisation. Perhaps you’ve been doing some proofreading for years but lack formal training. Our courses will give you the professional confidence that you need.

Take the level appropriate for your experience, or take all three for a comprehensive grounding. You will learn at your own pace under the guidance of an experienced tutor.

  1. P1: Introduction considers the role of a proofreader and helps you answer the question ‘Is proofreading for me?’ It looks at what kinds of errors to mark and how much to change. As P1 covers the very basics of proofreading, on its own it does not provide the thorough grounding needed to work as a professional proofreader.

  2. P2: Headway guides you through common editorial conventions, house styles, layout issues and the basics of dealing with texts involving illustrations, tables and notes. You will practise spotting and marking errors both on screen and on paper and will develop strategies for dealing with increasingly demanding texts.

  3. P3: Progress continues your learning with more complex texts, including illustrations, tables, notes, references and overmatter, and what to do when more than a proofread is required. You’ll also test your proofreading accuracy in the ‘zero tolerance’ challenge!

Each level includes varied exercises, from public information to academic texts, providing plenty of scope for practice as you learn. In P2 and P3 you will work with a tutor who will provide feedback and assess your assignments. A pass in the final assignment of P3 acts as part qualification for the CIEP mentoring scheme if you wish to continue your learning.
