Editing and Proofreading Music

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is suitable for:

  • CIEP members (or other editors/proofreaders) who are experienced in general book publishing but haven't handled music-related material, but who are themselves experienced musicians at least to some degree
  • recent entrants to proofreading/editing, probably after doing other things professionally, who are musically qualified or experienced
  • junior or new-entrant staff at music publishers
  • music teachers who wish to diversify their practice or move from teaching to publishing (or publishing-related work)

Participants must be able to read music.

Course description

Using a wide variety of examples, this course introduces the principles and techniques of editing and proofreading music:

  • checking for its visual and musical sense
  • marking up a music manuscript
  • understanding the needs of the music setter
  • considering the differences between book publishing and music publishing, and between different styles of notation as they are used for different types of music

The interaction of music notation with surrounding text is also examined, whether in an academic or educational context.

What you should know after the course

After this course you should:

  • know whether you have sufficiently detailed knowledge of music notation practice to undertake work in this field
  • have a greater understanding of the music publishing world and how it works
  • understand how music typesetting works and how to mark up a manuscript for setting
  • know about the issues that arise in scholarly books or journals, and educational music books
  • know what to watch out for when editing or proofreading scores
