Upgrading requirements: Training

You need the following training points to attain the higher membership grades:

Intermediate (IM) 6 points
(4 of which must be training in the core
skills of proofreading and/or copyediting)
Professional (PM) minimum of 10 points
Advanced Professional (APM) minimum of 15 points
(5 of which must be recent CPD)

All your points from previous successful upgrade applications count towards your total. For example, if you gained 10 points when upgrading to PM, you will need a further 5 training points to upgrade to APM.

To upgrade you need to show us that you have been trained in the core skills of proofreading and/or copyediting.

What counts as core-skills training?

  • A recognised training course in proofreading and/or copyediting.
  • Formal training in proofreading and/or copyediting provided by your employer or a training provider when you were working in-house.
  • Informal training (on-the-job experience) in proofreading and/or copyediting. This will attract fewer points than a formal training course.

If you have no formal training but have several years of editorial experience, you can show us that you have reached the required standard in the core skills by passing our editorial test.

For PM and APM, we expect to see in-depth training in one or both of the core skills.

Your core-skills training may have been some time ago, but we still need to know about it. We also want to see that you are committed to keeping your skills and knowledge up to date. For APM you will need to show recent CPD (within the 36 months prior to your application). See the editorial syllabus for full details of what we mean by core skills.

All training must be fully completed. You cannot submit as evidence courses you are still studying or intend to take. If you have not yet finished a course, don’t submit your application until you have completed it and received your certificate.

What information should I include?

For all training, tell us:

  • When the training took place: Give exact dates if you can.
  • Who trained you: Give the name of the training body or person (and, if a person, their position and any other details you think will demonstrate their competence to train you).
  • What your training covered: For example, BSI proofreading symbols; grammar and punctuation; onscreen mark-up; reference styles. Be as detailed as possible.
  • What form your training took: For example, workshop or online course; on-the-job training.
  • How long and how intensive your training period was: For example, one-day course; one hour a week for three weeks; self-study over a number of months.
  • Whether the training was assessed: Did you receive a marked result or simply a certificate of completion?

Recognised training courses and providers

Naturally, SfEP/CIEP courses are good evidence of training in the core skills! Check the course details for the number of upgrading points awarded on completion.

There are also many other providers of editorial skills training, and these vary enormously in terms of the range and depth of training they provide. The Admissions Panel rates courses according to a points system, so give us as much detail as you can.

Some examples of popular courses can be seen in our training course list. Include all training that you think might be relevant, even if it is not on our list. If you gained a merit, distinction or the like, say so; this will usually help your application.

If the course is new to the Panel, we will need to spend some time assessing it to see where it fits with other courses that we already know about so that a fair points total can be awarded. We may also need to request further information from you or the provider about the course. We may therefore take a little longer to assess your application, so please be patient.

Send us your certificates

  • We need to see certificates of the successful completion of all courses you are including as evidence.
  • If you do not have a certificate, ask the training provider to supply one. If you cannot contact the training provider, explain this on the form (in the space at the end for additional information).
  • Scan any paper documents so you can supply them electronically. You can add these to the application form.
  • Please do not redact your name from any certificate submitted. We need to confirm that the certificate is yours. All documents will be anonymised in the CIEP office before being sent to the Panel.

In-house (on-the-job) training

Please give us details of any training you have received through an employer. Tell us who you are (or have been) working for. Include relevant information such as the publications it produces, where the office is located and the kind of work you have been doing there.

CPD (continuing professional development)

We want to see that you are committed to your development as an editorial professional. We believe this marks out our members as being the best in the business.

The longer ago your core-skills training, the more important CPD is going to be. We all need to keep our skills and knowledge fresh, and we encourage all members to plan their CPD yearly. As a requirement of attaining the APM grade, we need to see evidence of CPD during the 36 months before upgrading.

The 36-month rule is strictly applied, so if you have done little or no CPD within this period, your application for APM will be rejected.

Evidence of CPD might include:

  • Attendance at courses, conferences, exhibitions or webinars to further your editorial or related skills (eg project management, onscreen efficiency skills, working with digital content, development editing).
  • Similar initiatives to further your knowledge in your specialist subject area (you will need to show evidence of working in this area).
  • Preparing and delivering training in editing skills to others.
  • Acting as a mentor or being mentored.
  • Participation in knowledge-sharing forums, such as the CIEP forums or Facebook groups for editors.
  • Examples from projects where you have developed a new or existing editorial skill (eg XML mark-up, using InDesign, project management).
  • Reading or research.

Include anything you think might be relevant, even if it is not mentioned above, as we take a broader approach to recognising CPD than for core skills.
