Upgrading requirements: References

You need to provide the following references to attain the higher membership grades:

Professional (PM) At least 1 reference
(50 hours or more of work for each referee)
Advanced Professional (APM) At least 2 references
(100 hours or more of work for each referee)

It will add more weight to your application if you can provide more references than the minimum required, but please do not list more than three referees as this may delay your application.

Who can give a reference?

If possible, choose as a referee someone who is well qualified to understand the core skills of copyediting and proofreading. An editorial professional is more suitable than, say, an academic journal editor or a self-publishing author.

It is important that you contact each referee before you apply to upgrade to check that they are willing to be your referee and let them know that we will contact them.

We will not inconvenience your clients; the reference sheet we send is a simple tick-sheet (with space for additional comments should they want to add anything) and should take no longer than 5–10 minutes to complete.

Each of your referees should be from different clients – not different people from within the same company.

What information should I include?

For all referees:

  • Provide the name of the client and contact details (including an email address) for your referee, with their position (eg production editor, project manager, head of publications) at the time you worked for them (it doesn’t matter if they have moved on or retired).
  • List the work completed for this client, together with how long each project took; this should add up to at least the required 50 (PM) or 100 (APM) hours.
